TOA Global Invades PICPA 2018

This year’s Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) 2018 annual convention took place in Bacolod City and we were there to celebrate with other accountants, firm owners, and key industry people.

It was an insightful and fun-filled 3-day event that celebrated the accounting profession. This year’s theme was “Promoting Integrity, Advancing Excellence,” a very apt messaging in this time of innovation for many accounting professionals.

The TOA Global team were at the SMX Convention Center, Ikthus, and L’ Fisher Hotel to meet and greet potential candidates. Oh, and we also gave away exciting freebies!

We’re ready for PICPA 2018!

Nick Sinclair On The Future Of Accounting

One of the event’s main highlights was the anticipated talk from our Chairman, Nick Sinclair, on the future of accounting. He discussed pressing issues accountants face today like the impact of technology on how we do our jobs, career paths and the many opportunities available to accountants.

The SMX Convention was packed during TOA Global Chairman Nick Sinclair’s talk.

Here’s a quick look at the panel session where he emphasized that no matter how advanced the technology becomes, people will always be indispensable in our profession.

People over automation

According to Nick, continuous changes in government policies have created complexities for firms in Australia. Having a global accounting team here in the Philippines has made it possible for local people to have more time with their clients. Anything that a US or Australian accountant does, the staff here in the Philippines can also do.

That’s amidst concerns of job takeover due to the prevalence of automation and AI. In fact, Nick emphasized that through technology, team members are able to do higher level work, allowing their Australian or American counterparts to be more client-facing.

Technology has made workflow easier and a lot more streamlined.

“You’re never gonna replace people. No matter how great technology is, you’re never going to replace people.”

Nick Sinclair

As the industry is bombarded with changes, it’s important for accountants, regardless of their level in the firm, to come up and implement strategies that will make the job and business better.

“What are those things you can implement to make your roles better and easier moving forward?”

Nick Sinclair

Is the Philippines years behind in terms of accounting?

Nick pointed out that one of the biggest challenges the Philippines (and even the US) face is it’s 7 years behind. Part of the reason is the lack of software companies focusing on the country. Things can really fast track if software companies develop a product that can be used here.

“Industry software companies–people that have built the technology for accountants–have never invested in the Philippines.”

Nick Sinclair

It’s all about managing people

Learning and growing are important for accountants and Nick recognizes that.  At the end of the day, it’s all about managing people. Stop putting people in buckets. Forget age. Some of the oldest partners we’ve worked with are the most technology savvy and those with a cheerful, youthful attitude. Build a business people will want to work for.

“People will want to work in an exciting workplace, have challenging work, with career progression whether you’re 80 or 30.”

Nick Sinclair

When it comes to molding the accountants of the future, Nick points out that university curricula need to change to keep up with the times. He noticed that those coming out of the universities are not exactly equipped with the right skill sets to thrive in the industry.

“Accountants today need to be very IT-savvy.”

Nick Sinclair

“They are not trained for the real world; they are trained for the old world.”
